100% PURE Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Butter Matte Lipstick Review & Swatches

You would think as a blogger, obsessed with green makeup I would have reviewed 100% Pure lipsticks by now but I’m only just reviewing them!

To start, I want to be honest. I’ve actually tried 100% Pure before but it was their Pomegranate Oil Anti-Aging Lipstick. Unfortunately it didn’t work out for me and I ended up returning them. Now that I’ve been doing this for a few years, I figured it was time to give them another go, this time with the Fruit Pigmented Cocoa Butter lipstick.

They do not have organic certification but these are vegan and Bunny Approved. They cost $28.00 USD for 4.5g or 0.15 oz. They retail in Australia for $29.95 AUD. The shelf life is 6 months after opening.

Ingredients:

They’re actually perfect to travel with considering how tiny the tube is! It’s very thin and light. It’s not as if it feels flimsy or terribly cheap but it doesn’t have that nice weightiness to it like most others.

I can really smell the fruit extracts. I don’t love because it reminds me of Starbursts (that sickly sweet, but artificial sweet scent).

100% Pure are almost synonomous with the clean beauty revolution, because of their pioneering use of fruit pigments. They’re also vegan and focus on using plants butters and oils so the formula is nourishing.

For me, with the little knowledge I have about forumlating makeup, fruit pigments stand out, not because they sound safe and natural but because they aren’t actually an FDA approved colourant. I did a little digging to find out what the actual process is to obtain fruit pigments and let’s just say it was interesting. If you’d like to read more you can find that post here.

In any case, the pigment is exceptional. Full bodied, opaque and smooth without skipping or patchiness. They also stain, so if you’re after long wear then they’re a good choice. I’m also really impressed with the texture and finish. It’s velvet matte but without a hint of heaviness. (The texture I wish the RMS Beauty Wild with Desire lipsticks were).

Swatches

Sandstone, Strawberry Cactus & Protea

Sandstone

A camel nude, matte, opaque & long-wearing lipstick

I loved this colour the second I applied it. Smooth, soft and warm nude that instantly lights up my features.

Strawberry Cactus

A peachy pink coral

I personally wouldn’t classify this as coral or even peachy. This leans much pinker. It’s a punchy, hot pink that wouldn’t be my first pick for myself but it is definitely a statement! It’ll leave a stain as well.

Protea

A neutral berry red with fuschia undertone

Again, I feel the description of this is a little off. There’s not much red as it’s overpowered by the fuschia. I like the way this looks, but it would be a colour I’d wear for an occasion, rather than an every day colour. This stained my lips for the ENTIRE afternoon and night after I applied it. Even scrubbing my lips didn’t remove every single trace, so be warned!

Final Word:

My favourite colour out of these is definitely Sandstone. It’s a gorgeous warm nude that I’d love wearing daily because of how light it feels without being drying.

Here’s the thing … As I said, Ive tried these before. Last time, I actually had a reaction to them. They irritated my lips, made them tingle and the smell was far too strong! I hate judging a company by one bad experience though, and that was about 5 years ago so I thought I’d at least try again. This formula also irritates my lips, just not as much.

I much prefer the feeling and finish of these compared to the Pomegranate Oil Lipstick. That formula is much waxier and a little too slick compared to this one. The colour also didn’t seem to apply well, it sat on top of my lips. It just felt a little off.

So if it weren’t for the reaction, I’d pick the Cocoa Butter lipsticks every time. I unfortunately didn’t take any pictures of the Pomegranate Oil lipstick swatches back then, so I have nothing to show you. Hopefully this review gives you an indication of the differences between them.
