I’m still testing out sunscreens to find the best one for my oily skin. This time I tried the 40 SPF BB cream from Wotnot Naturals, an Australian brand that actually started by creating an environmentally friendly disposable nappy. Since then they’ve also worked at providing effective and natural sunscreen options for the whole family.

First things first, the full name of this product is: 40 SPF Natural Face Sunscreen, BB Cream + Mineral Makeup. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue does it?! This face sunscreen provides broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection via 250mg/g of zinc oxide. There are no artificial preservatives and no fragrances which is perfect for me.

It’s $34.99 AUD for 2.1oz/60g and it expires 12 months after opening. If you’re interested and in Australia, check out Chemist Warehouse as it’s only $16.50 AUD. The packaging pictured here has since been changed to a light blue bottle but the formula is still the same. I’ve seen reviews commenting that the pump doesn’t work well but the one I have seems fine.

Ingredients

They say it is light weight, non-greasy with full and flawless coverage. I agree with this as it definitely doesn’t feel like typical sunscreen. It definitely has some thickness to the creamy formula so it’s not thin or watery. It also wears nicely with or without a face oil underneath. They recommend prepping your skin with moisturiser or an oil if you have dry skin. If I wear it over my serums it doesn’t dry down and stays a satin matte. 

This applies best if you dot a little bit around your face and then blend in. You can use fingers or a brush as it’s really creamy and doesn’t set matte. It has a light-medium coverage, which can be layered to a medium full. If you’ve tried the Suntegrity Impeccable Skin, the texture and finish is very similar. It also applies in the same manner. It’s very easy to spread and blend. I don’t like using the full recommended amount though because it can end up looking too thick and obvious.

Light-Medium (Beige)

I’m not going to sugar coat this because while I like the texture, wear and coverage I can’t even use it as a stand alone product. It blends in nicely as you can see in the following photo, but on my face it’s far too light. The one time I tested it, my partner asked me what I was wearing because it was so light it gave me the dreaded white cast.

I normally include a full face photo for foundation reviews but I can’t do so for this product. If you’ve seen any of my other foundation reviews, my skin tone is medium at best. Now that I think of it, I might update this review with it swatched against my other foundations or even the Suntegrity Impeccable skin, just so if you are thinking of it, you can at least see how it compares.

Final Word

Firstly if your skintone is light enough to wear this, then it’s a really affordable, wearable sunscreen that gives good coverage. It might not be suitable if you have really dry skin as it can be a little hard to blend around dry patches. I don’t have this issue though as mine ends up quite oily and the semi-matte finish actually helps to combat that. If you have naturally oily skin, then I’d skip too much prep if you’d prefer it to stay matte.

If I’m honest though, it’s really disappointing that this is the shade range they offer. Their only other shade is described as a light ivory. It’s 2022 and limited shade ranges have been a very well known issue for many consumers. If I can’t use it, I can imagine a huge amount of others can’t either. The only use it has for me is if I were to mix it with the Suntegrity Impeccable Skin, as none of their colours are a perfect match. To buy two different bottles of the Impeccable Skin would equal at least $159.90 AUD, whereas I could buy one and then mix it with the Wotnot Naturals Light-Medium for $114.94 AUD instead.

Since it is far cheaper to just buy this one product, I just really hope they consider a much improved shade range. The product is good enough for me to want to use it but as it is, it’s seriously lacking.

*Edited 11/10/2022* – They’ve since added two new shades, Ivory for very fair skin and Tan for Olive to Dark beige skin tones (which has been changed again to medium beige to olive skin tones)
