If you’re still searching for your perfect sunscreen, then join me! That sounds like I’m recruiting for a cult but honestly finding a wearable sunscreen has been on my list for so long now. I personally don’t leave my house without a hat (or hoodie in winter) just because the sun in Australia is so strong and I worry much less if I know I’m covered. However, having that extra protection is always good!

For this blog post I’m reviewing and swatching the zinc sticks from an Australian brand, called Winki Zinc. They are naturally tinted zinc sticks that blend seamlessly, are reef safe and environmentally friendly with zero plastic. Sounds like a winning formulation for me!
Winki Zinc offer samples for $6.00 AUD for 1.5g. It’s enough for a few uses with the Tinted Lip Zincs, but probably only enough to fully cover your face once. A full size should be used within two years after opened.

Ingredients
Australian Macadamia Nut Oil*^, Zinc Oxide (27.5%)^, Australian Avocado Oil^, Candelilla Wax, Cacao Butter*, Australian Jojoba Oil^, Vitamin E (from sunflower seed), Iron Oxides. *Certified Organic ^Australian Sourced
The Tinted Face Zinc and Tinted Lip Zinc both share the same ingredients. The difference would be the iron oxides between each shade. Winki Zinc are proudly vegan and palm oil free. They make their products from 85% Australian ingredients and they are SPF30 UVA/UVB.

I absolutely love that the plastic free packaging has had an upgrade in aesthetics. The minimalist text and logo is beautiful. I haven’t yet purchased a full size so I can’t comment on how sturdy the cardboard is but I really hope they addressed the product sliding down when you tried to apply it.
You can apply directly to your face or lips and then blend out as necessary. If I wanted to wear the face tints, I either have to skip moisturiser and apply in thinner layers. The oils and butters make them smooth and easy to blend. It’s still a balancing act, I find that the formula easily ends up too glowy, but the actual coverage is perfect for days when I don’t want to look made up. I like to apply a balm first and then the Lip Tints because I find that the zinc dries out my lips. They actually feel better on my cheeks.
Swatches
Tinted Face Zinc SPF30 Eco-Stick – Light, Medium & Dark

As you can see on the arm swatch the shade light blends so well on my skin tone you can barely see it. There is quite a big gap between this shade and Medium. I don’t find there to be a big difference between Medium and Dark. The pigment is quite sheer and can be blended in so that they finish is dewy, but the skin still looks like skin. Since the pigment is quite sheer, I would definitely go Light and then use Medium as a bronzer.

The formula is great because it doesn’t accentuate skin texture or dryness and the colour blends into the skin rather than sitting on top. The finish is more dewy than I would like, but that’s only because I have oily skin. I have to blot my skin and also powder it so I’m not shiny. Throughout the day it definitely comes back though, so it’s not as low maintenance as I’d prefer.

Tinted Lip Zinc Stick – Almond, Peach, Rose and Berry

These colours can be used as blush, lip and eye colours. I prefer to use them on my cheeks. I scrape off a little product with a spatula, dab i onto my cheeks and then blend with a flat top brush from Rae Morris. Without balm, the zinc can dry out my lips but that happens with any zinc product I’ve ever used.

Almond
Subtle, light neutral colour

Almond is a light shade with subtle pink and brown undertones. On my lips, it looks like a beautiful brown nude. It could also work as a base colour if you found that you were between Light and Medium and found that those shades are too warm. I find that almond works well at neutralizing the warmth in Peach.
Peach
Classic, summery pink

Peach is a little brighter pink than I personally like to wear on my cheeks, but if I mix it with Almond it tones it down. I really like this on my lips though. When I top balm with a little of this, it is so pretty and fresh.
Rose
Neutral brown/pink

I love this colour as a blush. For me, it’s one of those colours and formulas that sink into the skin rather than sitting on top. It looks natural but warms up my face. It’s also buildable so if you prefer more pigment, apply in layers and it’ll show up.
Berry
Deep red/pink hue with warm brown undertones

While Berry isn’t a day to day colour for me, it would look lovely if you’re after a more sultry look, or you need darker colours.

Final Word
It only takes a quick look on Instagram or Youtube and you’ll see that many people warn against stick sunscreens offering enough coverage. Unless you’re slathering this on as thickly as traditional zinc sticks, then I would agree that maybe it’s best to use this as a secondary sunscreen source. I’m not convinced that I’ll be relying on one of these for my sunscreen and so I’m still looking for my perfect everyday all over sunscreen!

That said, these colours are far more flattering and blendable than conventional zinc sticks. I really like Rose as a blush colour, even more so than other blushes I’ve tried. I will be purchasing full sizes of Light and Rose. Overall the company has a great product, with packaging that is compostable or recyclable. Any left over product can also break down without leaving microplatics.
