Juice Beauty Luminous Lip Crayon Review & Swatches

Juice Beauty have a full range of skin care and recently expanded their makeup line with the help of Gwyneth Paltrow.

The website states these lip colours are:

A unique blend of plant-derived Phyto-Pigments with replenishing emollients to keep lips soft with a smooth, creamy texture and a lightweight feel.

Only certain ingredients are certified organic. They do have a few seals though, including: ECO Cert, USDA Organic, and COPA (California Organics Products Act)

At the moment their mascara is under the 70% mark, in regards to the percentage of ingredients that are organic. They are also vegan friendly.

As with the lip creams, there are no expiration dates on the crayon or the boxes.

I bought these for $22.00 US for 0.10 oz / 2.7g and had them shipped to me by a friend and unfortunately I don’t think they ship to Australia.

After seeing the gorgeous sleek tubes for the lip creams, I must admit I am disappointed in these. The tubes are plastic and light. They are thick as well, so they actually remind me of children’s textas (marker). They’ve tried replicating a gun metal grey look, but it doesn’t quite work. The shade name is on the bottom, as well as the wind up mechanism so you don’t ever need to sharpen and waste product.

There is a very noticeable sweet scent for me. I don’t even have to sniff it up close to get wafts of it. I don’t like it but I don’t like anything that smells sweet. I don’t think it would be too overpowering for most people, as it’s not as strong as the lip cream.

It feels very light and thin, much more like a balm than a creamy lipstick. They actually feel cooling to the lips (which is bizarre)

The first swatch was so sheer, I thought that maybe I hadn’t put it on. As you can see it does build up to a light – medium opacity. Don’t expect a lipstick.

Malibu, Pebble & Laguna

Malibu is accurately described as nude pink. I find this one works best built up a little as a thin layer looks a little pasty on me. It’s stays matte until you add more product. It’s borderline too light, but I think it would work with heavy eye makeup, blush and bronzer to counteract the lightening effect it has on my features. It takes more than two layers to achieve noticeable pigment. I swiped the crayon a few times before it started to become glossier. It’s a close match to the lipboost Bare by Gressa

This one is described as pink rose. Pebble is a darker, warmer and pinker shade than Malibu. It takes a little less effort than Malibu to build up to a medium opacity and still feels light, balmy and comfortable. I can wear this without having to balance it with heavier makeup elsewhere as it doesn’t wash me out.

Laguna is decribed as a pink mauve and I definitely agree. Lightly applied, it’s a beautiful subtle blush of colour. It’s a much sheerer, lighter version of their lip cream in Syrah. This is probably an easier colour to wear for every day (not that Syrah isn’t an easy colour, it’s just more pigmented and feels like a true lipstick)

  • Light and thin texture
  • Feels more like a balm than a lipstick
  • Sheer pigment can be built up to light coverage
  • Easy to apply from the crayon
  • Vegan
  • Easy to throw into your bag and the plastic packaging means you don’t have to worry about it breaking

  • Not unscented
  • Again, not a huge fan of hydrogenated oils
  • Not an opaque lipstick

Final Word:

Even though I don’t love the packaging, these lip crayons are actually better suited to me because I’m used to wearing balm. They offer soft, sheer colours without ever becoming thick, heavy or tacky. Since they are lightly pigmented, you can apply without a mirror and they will help plump up your lips a bit with the sheen finish they have. As long as you don’t expect the experience of a lipstick and you want sheer colour, with the feeling of a balm they are a very good option to try.

These colors look beautiful on you! I have medium olive skin tone similar to yours (mine is perhaps a bit more yellow) so I really appreciate seeing these colors on you. You convinced me to take the leap. Thank you for the informative review and Happy New Year! 🙂

Hey Rosana, I’m glad I could help! I think the only one you might find a bit light is Malibu .. it’s not my favourite for my skintone. I hope you’re having a great start to your year xx

Thanks for that tip about Malibu, Claire. Yes, it looks like it is too cool and too light for women with our skin tone, doesn’t it? I look forward to more from you through your blog and Instagram page. I am very happy to have found you! XX
