Neek Skin Organics Lipstick Review & Swatches

Neek Skin Organics is an Australian brand that has a small range of lipsticks and skin care. They are against animal testing, avoid synthetic chemicals and use recycled packaging.

They have 5 shades and 1 balm in their lipstick range. I ordered 1 of each colour. My package arrived quickly, in a neat little bundle. They also sent a sample of their active cleanser for me to try.

The website states these lip colours are:

100% paraben, lead, sulphate, phthalate, mineral oil and synthetic fragrance free.

I didn’t find official certification on their website, however, when you read the ingredients you’ll notice that most are organic. They are vegan and cruelty free, and they are not coloured with synthetic dyes.

These have an expiration of 12 months after opening. In Australia we can buy them for $28.00 AUS for 4.5g or 0.16 oz. They have new packaging and are phasing out the old packaging. The ingredients are exactly the same, but the new packaging is a sturdier bamboo case. If you want the colours and don’t mind the old recycled cardboard packaging they are still selling them for $14.00 AUS.

Each tube is individually packaged in a recycled cardboard box. It has all the information printed on the outside, including the ingredients. I ordered the lipsticks in the old packaging. I believe they now have bamboo packaging, which would be much sturdier. The tube is a light brown cardboard with the Neek logo printed on the side. You’ll find the shade on the bottom.

The sweet orange peel scent is thankfully not too strong. It is still noticeable to my sensitive nose though.

I found that you need a few layers to make it feel creamier and moisturizing. It’s not comfortable with only 1 layer. In fact, I want to wear a balm underneath them. They feel a little tight and dry and do not fill out the lines on my lips. Make sure your lips are exfoliated and well moisturized before applying. The formula is not forgiving enough to cover any dryness.

You need to use a fair amount of pressure and let the product warm to you lips to help application.

One swipe will give not you an opaque swatch of colour. They all start quite sheer, more of a tinted balm. More layers will give you medium opacity. Sweet About Me stays as a sheer to light opacity because it’s designed to wear as a balm.

Swatches:

Come Into My World, Whole Lotta Rosie, Sweet About Me, Sunsets & Friday On My Mind

Come Into My World

This is a nudie! This pink toned nude lipstick looks great on those with medium to darker skin tones. Gives lips a sensual look [blush].

The bullet is a light, pale pink and I knew from the moment I swatched this, it would be way too light for me. This is one of the reasons why I started this blog though. Even though they say it will suit medium to darker skin tones, it definitely doesn’t and I could never wear this. It doesn’t sit on my lips properly and I don’t love the formula either. It feels drying. The one good thing is that it is the more opaque shade of the 5, and that’s with little effort.

Whole Lotta Rosie

When you are looking for a bit of pink on your pout – this is the lippie for you. Moisturising and nourishing with a rosie highlight.

You can see faint pink shimmer in this mid-tone warm pink. I love how warm this appears on my lips. It’s not a barbie doll pink and the formula isn’t as drying as Come Into My World. It took me a few swipes to achieve this level of opacity, so you can also use it as a sheerer balm.  I don’t think you could achieve complete opacity though.

Sweet About Me

Sweet about me is a subtle, translucent like, shimmery neutral hue with a tinge of pink, perfect for everyday wear and one of our best sellers!

By far the sheerest and hardest colour to build up. It looks like a mid-tone purple, with very noticeable shimmer. I feel that the gold shimmer, makes it move around, rather than coating the lips in one even layer. Luckily, it’s fine enough so you can’t notice chunky glitter on your lips. The formula isn’t moisturizing or thick enough without a balm underneath. That being said, I do like the effect it gives your lips. It gives them dimension and a tint of purple/pink.

Sunsets

The lovely Sunsets screams summer, and sits on the palette somewhere in between pink and orange. This coral-hued shade suits most complexions, so go on and add it to your basket today

Sunsets looks quite hot pink with a bit of shimmer. It applies sheer at first, but the more you apply the bolder the colour will become. This is not a matte lipstick, it has a sheen, but definitely not a glossy finish. This formula is better, it applies evenly and is moisturizing. I like the bright, burst of vibrant pink that’s not too garish.

Friday On My Mind

For those after a little more depth and colour, this best selling natural lipstick is the one you’ve been waiting for. A day to night lipstick, it’s perfect for the end of the working week when yep, you guessed it – you’ve got Friday on your mind.

The bullet looks like a darker, plummy pink. I think it applies lighter than this. It reminds me of a pinker, slightly less plummy version of RMS Lip2Cheek in Illusive. Like the others, it applies sheer at first and more layers will give you a deeper pink with plum undertones. There is minimal shimmer in this one.

PROS:

  • Reasonably priced
  • When I posted this, Sweet About Me and Sunsets were still available at half price, for the orignal packaging
  • Formula is not thick
  • Can be applied sheer and more opaque
  • Sweet Orange Peel oil is barely detectable
  • My favourite colours are Whole Lotta Rosie and Friday on My Mind

CONS:

  • I do not like shimmer in lipsticks. It could end up every where once the colour wears off
  • Not as moisturizing as some formulas I’ve tried
  • Come Into My World does not suit me
  • I would prefer to wear a balm underneath all of them
  • Formula is not consistent
  • Not an opaque lipstick

Final Word:

I think these work better with a balm underneath, which I don’t mind so much because they are not as expensive. This would only be a problem if you are out and about and don’t want to carry both. The colours I purchased are in the original formula and packaging. They have updated both, so there’s a good chance the moisturizing properties are better in the newer one.

If you’re not one for bold, opaque lips, then this range can be worn every day, even the brighter colours. This is because they apply sheer and you can control how much impact you want. The only one I do not recommend for medium skin tones or darker would be Come Into My World.
