Nui Cosmetics Foundation Review & Swatches – Intense Taiao, Puru & Wera

If you look at my instagram it’s starting to fill pictures of bright, soft colours perfect for Spring. October is one of my favourite months. Melbourne warms up after a long winter.

It’s also the time when my skin starts changing yet again. I need nourishing skin care, but not one that makes me too oily by the end of the day. It’s also the season I have to emerge from my cosy hoodie so hats become my next best friend.

I’m searching for a perfect sunscreen and  I’m yet to find my absolute perfect combination of skincare and makeup so here we go.

I like the thought of a light-weight, liquid foundation, but my skin can be so finicky. I bought some samples of the Nui Cosmetics liquid foundation from The Green Beauty Jungle a while ago and now I’m finally ready to try them.

A lightweight, nourishing foundation that blends into the skin beautifully with a soft focus finish. Coverage can be built up from light to medium and stays looking natural and radiant.

Organic Certification:

Made with 90% Certified Organic Ingredients. I’m not sure about their expiration as I as I purchased samples. 30ml will cost €34.90 or $68.00 CAD.

Ingredients:

Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe Vera) Leaf Juice*, Aqua (Water), Titanium Dioxide, Glycerine°, Zinc Oxide, Lecithin°, CI 77492 (Iron Oxide), Oryza Sativa (Rice) Powder*, Boron Nitride, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, CI 77491(Iron Oxide), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Squalane, Chamomilla Recutita Flower Extract*, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract*, CI 77499 (Iron Oxide), Origanum Vulgare (Oregano) Leaf Extract*, Hydrastis Canadensis (Goldenseal) Root Extract*, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract*, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Extract*, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Flower Extract*, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract*, Vanillin**, Cinnamal**, Linalool**, Limonene**, Geraniol**.
* Certified Organic
** naturally occurring in essential oils
° plant-based

Packaging:

If you purchase full a full size product, it comes in a dark, glass bottle with a pump.

Scent:

On the website, they make a point of noting a subtle scent of vanilla, but it’s so slight it barely bothers me. I prefer this, as vanilla is one of my least favourite scents.

Texture:

While it’s not a thin, watery liquid foundation, it’s still smooth and not too thick or creamy. It stays moist for quite a while longer than the Complete Coverage Foundation from Nu Evolution so you have time to work.

Application:

I like that this doesn’t dry down completely matte, until you’ve blended it into your skin. Once it’s set it’s still possible to layer, but I think light layers work best. I’d recommend using a stiffer, buffing brush but it’s very easy to blend, so if you’re in a pinch even clean fingers would work.

Opacity:

It blends out to light coverage to begin, and with another layer it will be medium. I don’t think you could achieve full opacity, but that’s a good thing in my opinion. It keeps your skin looking like skin.

Swatches:

Intense Taiao, Puru and Wera

INTENSE TAIAO is a warm light to medium shade, slighly darker than TAIAO

PURU is a warm medium shade.

WERA is a warm medium to tan shade

I settled on using the shade Puru to take photos for this review, but in all honesty once blended out, Puru and Wera are very close in tone. The formula doesn’t accentuate fine lines, feel tight or dry and powdery. I just think it makes my skin look a little flat. Of course, there’s always highlighter to bring back the glow but I don’t always use one. That’s my lazy side coming out. My skin always looks it best when it’s slightly dewy, so I’ll always prefer that finish over matte.

PROS:

  • Good ingredients
  • The vanilla scent is not offensive
  • The finish still looks like skin
  • It doesn’t end up cakey or thick
  • Light to medium coverage for everyday
  • Matte finish

CONS:

  • If you’re looking for a full coverage foundation, then this isn’t for you.
  • The shade range isn’t that diverse
  • The finish is a little too flat for my personal preference

Final Word:

I think my biggest issue with this foundation, is that it’s not the finish I prefer for my skin. While my skin is oily, a matte finish doesn’t make it look plump and fresh. Granted you can mimic that effect with more makeup, but as a lazy makeup junkie (is there such a thing?), less is more.

The other … I won’t say gripe, but I guess slight hurdle I had, was that the shades I tried were all very similar. In fact, I could barely tell Puru and Wera apart when I tested them on my face. I also think the reason why it makes me look a little flat is because I need a touch more yellow.

In all honesty I’m very much on the fence with this foundation. I don’t think any of the colours I tried were the best match for my skin but then again neither was the formula. That’s my own fault though. As I mentioned, I always prefer a dewier finish.

If you’re searching for a matte foundation, with a slower dry time than Nu Evolution then I would recommend this one. It gives you more time for blending and is a little easier to blend because of it.
