For the last few months I have been testing out some of the brands featured on my My List of Natural, Fragrance Free, Low or No Waste Deodorant post. I’ve never had big issues with excessive sweat or smell, so I’ve used gentler deodorants for quite a few years. My main concern recently has been about the unrecyclable, virgin plastic packaging, so I figured it was time to choose better.
Meow Meow Tweet Unscented, Baking Soda Free Deodorant Cream / $14.00 USD – $19.00 AUD for 2.4oz – 68g
Ingredients
I find that this has a distinctive scent, I’m assuming it’s from either the arrowroot powder or magnesium hydroxide. It’s not offensive, but not completely scent free. It takes a little more effort so it’s not truly fuss free. Firstly, you scoop some out, and it’s best if you rub it GENTLY between your fingers first to make it form a ball. Next, rub GENTLY into your armpits. I find small circular motions best and the heat will allow it to melt into your skin.
However if you are slightly too impatient, rub it in too hard or fast before it melts, it tends to ball up and crumble. You’ll also end up with a little residue left on your hands, which I like to wash off. It’s also not the best to rub into my partners arm pits because of his hair. It sticks and it’s really hard to rub in. It’s a pity since it works so well for both of us. I’m much less active, work from home and don’t sweat excessively. My partner however can work long hours, on his feet all day, in all type of weather and this keeps him stink free for at least a day, sometimes almost two! He really likes that aspect, but he doesn’t like me applying it!
Woohoo All Natural Deodorant Paste Mellow / $16.95 AUD for 2.12oz – 60g
Ingredients
This one is actually my favourite out of the contenders. It definitely qualifies as unscented for me. The formula is hard, especially in winter so you have to be patient and apply in gentle strokes or circles to allow it to warm to your skin first. However once it’s warm, it applies easily. I apply enough of a layer so I can see it, but then once my arms are down and I go about my day it sinks in and doesn’t leave white stains.
This one works the best in my opinion. I stay stink free for about 3 days. My partner stays stink free for 1 day, up to two depending on how active he is. The application is much, much easier than Meow Meow Tweet and it’s never irritated me. It can catch and pull a little on longer hair, but as long as you don’t press too hard, it shouldn’t be an issue. Once it’s warm it applies like a cream. My partner definitely prefers the application of this one over the Meow Meow Tweet cream.
Viva La Body Natural Deodorant Sensitive Neutral Scent / $20.00 AUD – 65g
Ingredients
I’m not entirely sure what gives this a sweet scent, but it’s definitely noticeable for someone with super smell! It’s simple to apply though. Just make sure you allow it to warm up a little before you apply it. I have found that this one isn’t as easy to apply as the Woohoo one. It takes longer to warm up and will crumble off in little bits if you haven’t waited long enough. The good news though is that the sweet smell doesn’t linger. I can imagine though, this would not be an issue for anyone not as sensitive as me.
This one hasn’t cracked like the Woohoo stick, which is a bonus. It definitely nourishes and moisturises your arm pits, so another bonus! Again the compostable packaging is great for anyone concerned with minimal waste.
Final Word
I consider this little experiment an absolute success, considering I’ve definitely found at least one deodorant I’m happy to continue using. I think I had a head start considering I was already using one that has a similar action; rather than stopping sweat, it stops bacteria that creates body odour. My favourite is definitely Woohoo Body! for the following reasons:
It’s truly unscented, it’s easier to apply than a scoopable cream, it’s a no waste product due to the cardboard packaging and it works! I’m also quite pleased that I’m able to support a small Australian business!
All of these deodorants are much more nourishing than any other I’ve used. My arm pits are quite neglected, but the butters and oils keep them much softer. They all help moisturise and minimise chafing.
Each of these companies also make deodorants scented with essential oils, so if they don’t affect you, then they’re also great choices!
